In this thesis,a pair of chromophores with donor-acceptor properties,4-Benzoylbenzoic acid (4-BBA) and2-Naphthalene Sulfonic Acid(2-NSA), were succesfully intercalated into Mg-Al-CO3-LDH andCo-Al-CO3-LDH by the method of ion-exchange procedures in ethyleneglycol. The obtained co-intercalation compounds were characterized byX-ray diffraction, infrared and thermogravimetry techniques. Thephotochemical properties of the obtained compounds were studied byUV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. The guest molecularstructures were investigated utilizing ab initio (HF/6-31G) method byG03w. From the X-ray diffraction data, the guest size and the chargedensity of the oxygens of the guest, and the orientation of these anionsbetween the layers were determined. The relationship between thestructure and the photophysical properties of the obtained compoundswere discussed. These results show that the pair of chromophores,4-BBA-2-NSA intercalated into Mg-Al-LDH can not give rise to energytransfer processes, but in Co-Al-LDH system, it was observed the energy transfer processes. The reason might be that the stereoscopic structure of4-BBA and2-NSA can not match with each other in the interlayer regionof the host, while the difference of orientation of4-BBA and2-NSA inthe interlayer region of Co-Al-LDH so the existence of guest-hostinteraction, guest-guest interaction were observed, and guest-guest giverise to energy transfer processes because of the characteristics of theirexcited states in the co-intercalation compounds.
