At present, there are different kinds of coal gasification technology in the world. Each kind of coal gasification has the kind of coal of its own. If not suitable, even the advanced gasification cannot show its advantage. From the running results of gasification unit of Sinopec can show that not all of the coal can be used to Shell gasifier. If coal properties fluctuate, there would have a significant impact on the operation of the gasification processes, or can be serious with restricted device of long cycle and stable operation.Based on the massive material consult and the data filing, the relation between practiced working condition and particle size, coal ash content and composition of ash were discussed in this paper. At the same time, the relationship between mineral composition, grain distribution of minerals, coal ash melting temperature and particle size are studied in depth. Following conclusions were obtained in this paper.1) The effect of coal properties were analysed in this paper. Particle size and coal ash content of coal, the ratio of SiO2/Al2O3and Al2O3/(Fe2O3+CaO) of coal ash have an important interconnection on Shell gasifier of A plant. While the weight of Fe2O3and the ratio of silicate to aluminium of coal ash have effect on Shell gasifier of B plant. Therefore we can see not all of coal is appropriate for SCGP, the coal properties is the key element.2) Particle size has an important influence on coal ash melting temperature. The change of particle size directly affects the intensity of crystalline minerals, such as Quartz, Kaolinite, Pyrite and Hematite. Because of these crystalline minerals, the coal ash melting temperature have large differences. The root cause is that grain accumulative distribution of minerals.3) In view of information, practical data collected and summarized and the operating experience of Shell coal gasification technology plant, this paper has established a complete coal quality index system to apply to Shell coal gasification technology plant. The index system contains coal quality foundation, composition of coal ash, coal ash-fusibility. And also has established programs of single coal evaluation, blending optimization evaluation and artificial evaluation. Through evaluation system, not only can find the plan of coal blending, but also can offers some theoretical support for production application. It can greatly reduce artificial homework and improve work efficiency.The study of this topic can give the method to find coal for Shell coal gasification technology effectively and provide theoretical references to production. And the stability of Shell gasifier is improved obviously making sure a safe and long period running and resulting in profits in both economy and society.
