A novel terpolymer of maleic anhydride(MA), acrylic(AA) and4-vinyl pyridine(4-VP), simplified as MA/AA/4-VP, which can be used as a multifunctional water treatment agent, was synthesized in this work. The terpolymer had excellent efficiency in scale, corrosion inhibition and can be monitored on-line.In chapter1, the development and mechanism of multifunctional water treatment agent were reviewed. The analytical methods of maleic anhydride-acrylic acid copolymer were summarized. The objective of this thesis was proposed.In chapter2, a new terpolymer (MA/AA/4-VP) was prepared by emulsion polymerization with the raw materials of maleic anhydride, acrylic acid and4-vinylpyridine. The influence of polymerization conditions on the product rate and molecular weight of copolymer was evaluated by orthogonal experiment, and the optimum conditions were determined. The structure of MA/AA/4-VP was characterized by fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR、ultraviolet spectrum (UV)、nuclear magnetic resonance spectra NMR (’H-NMR) and elemental analysis.In chapter3, the copolymer scale inhibition rate was evaluated by the static scale inhibiting method, and the corrosion inhibition was studied by polarization curve method. The micro structure of the scale was analysised by XRD and SEM. The scale inhibition and corrosion inhibition mechanism were researched.In chapter4, a new method for the determination of maleic anhydride-acrylic acid copolymer was established based on cationic dye and anionic polymer to form an ion association complex, which greatly enhanced the RLS intensity. The resonance light scattering intensity was linear in the certain concentration range of maleic anhydride-acrylic acid copolymer. The influencing factors were researched, such as pH, cationic dye concentration, reaction time and reaction temperature. It was applied to the determination of maleic anhydride-acrylic acid copolymer sample.
