Antibiotics have been widely used to treat people and animal diseases and promote animal growth. The types and yield of antibiotics increases unceasingly. It makes antibiotic production wastewater of an important source of environmental pollution. To date, because of the poor removal efficiency of antibiotic production wastewater, it is particularly important to make clear the characteristic organic pollutants in antibiotic production wastewater. However, little is known about residual analysis of the organic pollutants in antibiotic production wastewater. The aim of this study was to develop suitable detection methods for the pollutants in antibiotic production wastewater.A highly selective and sensitive analytical method was developed for simultaneous determination of spiramycin (SPM-I) and neospiramycin (NSPM-I) in antibiotic production wastewater. Solvent extraction was applied to cleanup of the highly complex wastewater sample. The recoveries of antibiotic and intermediate were improved by optimizing the solvent extraction procedure. The antibiotic and intermediate residues were analyzed by ultra performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). A combination of two mobile phases and a gradient program were adopted to achieve a total separation of two target compounds with good peak symmetry. The parameters of MS, especially the cone voltage, were optimized to obtain the high analytical sensitivity. The result shows the method has good stability, accuracy and sensitivity through the standard curve, recovery and method detection limit. The developed method was applied in the determination of antibiotic production wastewater from a pharmaceutical manufacturing factory in Wuxi City. The results reveal the high concentration levels of SPM-I and NSPM-I in antibiotic production wastewater. Purge and trap technique combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is developed for analyzing the concentrations of organic solvent in antibiotic production wastewater. The purge and trap procedure, the parameters of MS were optimized to obtain achieve a total separation of two target compounds with good peak symmetry. The method has good stability, accuracy and sensitivity. The method was applied in the determination of organic solvent in antibiotic production wastewater.A method was developed for simultaneous determination of low molecular mass organic acids in antibiotic production wastewater by ion chromatography (IC) after solid phase extraction. The recoveries of added standards were more than83%. The relative standard deviation (RSD, n=3) were between4.42%and6.41%. The calibration curves were linear with correlation coefficients (r2) more than0.99. The results prove that this method is suitable for the determination of low molecular mass organic acids in antibiotic production wastewater. The developed method was applied to determine the concentration of three kinds of organic pollutants during the treatment of antibiotic production wastewater. With assessing the removal efficiency of three kinds of organic pollutants, this study provides some improvement suggestions about the treatment of antibiotic production wastewater.
