Short chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCPs) are polychlorinatedn-alkanes with10~13carbon atoms, used as lubricants, plasticizers, andadditives, as well as fame retardants in a wide range of applications. Dueto their long-range atmospheric transport, persistence, bioaccumulation, toxicity, they are currently under review as candidate of persistent organicpollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention. Research on theirenvironmental level and migration and transformation is urgently needed.Twenty-three sediments samples of Qiantang River and202soilsamples of Zhejiang Province collected in2011were analyzed for theconcentration, spatial distribution, congener pattern, to indentify thepossible sources of SCCPs. Samples were pretreated by Soxhlet, purifiedby column chromatography, and detected by high resolution gaschromatography/electron capture negative ion low resolution massspectrometry (HRGC/ECNI-LRMS).In this paper, SCCPs in the totals of23sediments samples of Qiantang River could be detected, and ranged from46-670ng/g, with theaverage concentration of212ng/g, and the average chlorination degreewas63.3%. The compound C11-13Cl7-8-SCCPs is the main congenerpattern and the relative content of long chain congener C13is about27%,showing that the overall of the Qiantang River is polluted by industry. The spatial distribution of SCCPs in Qiantang River presents that theupstream and the downstream of Qiantang River is higher than themidstream and estuary, possibly related to the industrial distribution, urban activities. In addition, the high SCCPs concentration and the highcontent of the C13of Fuchunjiang Dam samples may be related to theSCCPs accumulation by the Fuchunjiang Dam.The results of the soil samples in Zhejiang Province shows that thelevel of the soil ranged from ND-1736ng/g, with the averageconcentration of111ng/g, SCCPs in12samples were below the LOD.Most of the SCCPs concentration is less than100ng/g. Congener of Cl7-8is the main component. This congener pattern shows that soil in theZhejiang Province is polluted by industry emission through theatmosphere transportation. Quzhou, Jiaxing, Huzhou have low SCCPsconcentrations and short chain low chlorinated congeners. Taizhouelectronic waste dissembling area, Xiaoshan industry area and Lianduindustry area are seriously polluted by the high concentration and longchain high chlorinated congeners.
