With the increasing growth of the international demand of the oil and gas resource andthe rapid development of the ocean industry, human oil exploration has expanded from theshallow sea gradually to the deep sea, especially the South China Sea containing abundantdeep sea oil and gas resources. So, it’s time for the development of the platform suitable forthe development of gas resources in the South China Sea.Compared with other deepwater platforms, Spar has many advantages, for example, thesimple structure, perfect stability because of the center of gravity under the buoyancybuoyancy’s, stable movement performance and good economic advantage, and good recordsof serve since it applied. There has been three generations of Spars, from the first generationof Classic Spar, the second generation of the Truss Spar and the third generation of Cell Spar.Spar platforms meet the requirements of the exploiture of the oil and gas in deepsea, and canbe applied in the development of the South China Sea in future.China has’t owned the capacity in the design and building of the Spar platform, yet. Theforeign ocean engineering corporations have monopolized the design and the building of theSpars. The building of the Classic Spar and Truss Spar is so difficult that only one shipyard inthe North Europe owns it, and Cell Spar is very small in the tonnage, which limits theappliment of more facilities on the deck. So, the concept design of the new Spar platformswith our own intellectual property rights becomes necessary.This paper summarizes the new design concept of the four deepsea ocean structures, thestructure features and development trend. According to the South China Sea environment,reference to the platforms at service, as well as the characteristics of the new platform conceptstructure, and based on the research analysis structure design rules and methods, CESparplatform is raised up, along with the other two new Spar platforms, CSpar and ESparplatform.According to the design standard of the rules, the stability and hydrodynamicperformance of three new Spar platform concepts are analysised, including the calculation andanalysis of the stability and the hydrodynamic performance in the frequency domain, andanalysis the results by contrast, which shows that the motion response characteristic of the CESpar platform is very excellent.This paper also designs the preliminary mooring system of the CESpar platform, andcalculates the performance in the frequency domain both in the work condition and the stormcondition. The calculation and analysis shows that the design of the half-tension mooringsystems effectively controls the movement of the platform, and the maximum tension of themooring lines and the maximal displacement of the platform can satisfy the rule’srequirements both when the mooring lines intact and one line damaged.
