It has been long that classic issue of flow around obstacle became a research focus influid mechanics. The numerical simulation of flow around a cylinder possesses an importantplace in computational fluid dynamics. In the field of naval architecture and oceanengineering, the calculation of wind load of ships by simulating the air flow around get moreand more attentions. In recent years, the rapid development of OpenFOAM, an open sourceCFD software package, provides a good platform to carry out the CFD numerical simulationstudy. And its open source makes it possible that users can study and develop its CFD classlibrary. In this thesis, study of flow around a cylinder and air flow around ships was carried outusing OpenFOAM. The main work of this paper include: First, numerical simulations of flowaround a cylinder under different Reynolds numbers (range from1to1×106) were carried out.Specific applications of this two different turbulence models, the LES model and theSpalart-Allmaras one-equation model, were explored. The drag coefficient and Strouhalnumber calculated by the numerical simulation of flow around a cylinder under differentReynolds number have a good consistency with the experimental results, which verifies thecorrectness of the calculation method. Second, four numerical simulation of air flow aroundcontainer ship placed on with different form were carried out. Above all, the laws of the shipsuffered wind load coefficient and torque coefficient under different wind angles as theReynolds number changes were explored. Then, a comparative study of suffered wind load oftwo ships placed in different forms (one is evenly placed along the fore and aft direction andone is placed at both ends of the ship) under different wind angles was carried out. The resultsshowed that: The form of container placed at both ends can effectively reduce the windresistance of the ship under the premise of having a proper lateral force coefficient and ayawing moment coefficient. And it is also helpful to improve the speed stability of the ship.At last, a comparative study of impact of ship suffered wind load caused by the gap in eachrow of containers under different wind angles was carried out.
