The widely use of modern high-speed cutting CNC machine tools generate a higherrequirements of the accuracy of tool and cutting reliability. Milling is a very commonprocessing method on CNC machine tools. This thesis study on the milling force modelingand the dynamic characteristic of tool, based on finite element software and Matlab. Asquare-step mills was been introduced as unit of analysis.Firstly, the characteristics of milling has been described, and some models of millingforce provided by previous studies was summarized. The instantaneous rigid force model wasselected for this thesis and performed via Matlab. It greatly reducing the computation timecompared with the finite element software.Aimed on the versatility of the calibration of cutting force coefficients, the direct wayand indirect way was introduced. The mechanism of orthogonal cutting and oblique cuttingwas been described, and the relationship between cutting force, tool geometry and the amountof cutting has been discussed. Specific cutting force coefficients was recognized through thetwo ways, the advantage and drawbacks of them has been compared. It was shown thatindirect way has a very remarkable universality. Finally, the dynamic characteristic of tool system has been studied. First, the finiteelement method and experimental modal analysis has been taken, then the transient responseanalysis has been performed via finite element method, while the previous calculated millingforce has been used as dynamic load. A set of parameters of the transient response analysishas been conducted, and the displacement response of all the nodes has been obtained. This research constitutes a fundamental work of digital design and cutting tool dynamic. The establishment of the cutting force method and dynamic analysis method can be used infuture work of structural parameters optimization of tool and prediction of cutting processstability.
