The main pulse of excitation source in the axial flow pump is the vortex, it seriouslyaffects the performance of the axial flow pump. The research of the vortex in the axialflow pump is in order to improving the vibration characteristics of the axial flow pump,reducing the noise, improving the pump’s working life, reducing the internal fluctuationintensity of the excitation source.The axial flow pump’s three-dimensional model was built on the base of thestructural characteristics for axial flow pump, the three-dimensional model was dividedinto unstructured grid by using of the ICEM software, the flow field data such as thepressure and the speed data was solved by the CFD calculation methods. After thecomparing of the calculation results of two methods which are Renaults averagesimulation method and large-eddy simulation method, the Reynolds-averaged vortexsticky two-equation SST k model was selected as the numerical model for flow fieldcalculations, and the pressure correction method which belong to the separate originalvariable method was selected to discrete equations, this pressure correction method is alsocalled the Semi-implicit’s Method For Pressure-Linked Equations.And then the vortex core extraction step for engineering applications was proposedon the basis of related vortex extraction algorithm: First, using the distribution of pressureand velocity vectors find out the possible vortex core region; then using the eigenvalueextraction method and the vorticity analysis method which were in the ENSIGHTsoftware find out the location of the vortex core points, finally accessing the distributionof the vortex.The vortex core extraction method which was proposed in this paper is a quick andeffective solution to the vortex extraction engineering project, it has an important researchvalue and engineering applications.
