Coilers are crucially important equipments on the production of hot strip mills, and its performance always affect the ultimate quality of finished coil as well as the efficiency of the whole production lines. To ensure coiler control system has good performance, it is necessary to do some research on the coiler speed and tension control.This subject against a background of a project, combined with the analysis of the control system structure on-site, make detailed description of the equipments and processes in production line, and do the study on four typical aspects related with tension and speed control in curling process. Next, analyze the reason for tension fluctuations in tension coil control system, and the dynamic torque compensation and the accurate calculation path for volume diameter is derived. The article also establishes a mathematical model of coiler and designs a typical PID control system. For the model’s nonlinear, time-varying characteristics, I make the research on the model reference adaptive control theory and algorithms formula are derived, design the adaptive controller and adaptive rate which use Narendra error model based on Lyapnuov stability theory-model reference adaptive control strategy. To do this, controller parameters constantly update with environments changing in entire coil system, so we can achieve constant tension winding.At last, built a simulation model using Matlab/Simulink, and the simulation results show that when the model parameters (electromagnetic time constant) changes within a certain range and some outside disturbances introduce, the designed model reference adaptive controllers are able to effectively adjust the controller parameters and to reduce the impact of external disturbances, to realize that the system has good stability.
