Polyester fabrics are favored by people for its good wearing properties andextensively applied to the fields of garment, ornament etc. However, polyester fabricsare susceptible to micro-organisms in the course of processing and using which willhave a bad effect on human health. The purpose of the present work is to prepare nanosilver solutions and apply them to the antibacterial finish of polyester fabrics impartingto the fabrics good antibacterial performances, which will provide theoretical bases forthe antibacterial functional modification of polyester fabrics. In this paper, the amino-terminated hyperbranched polymer (HBP-NH2) wassynthesized from methyl acrylate and triethylene tetramine by polycondensation. ThenHBP-NH2was applied as a reductant to produce nano silver. The formation of nanosilver was characterized by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Transmission ElectronMicroscopy (TEM), UV/Visible Absorption Spectrophotometry (UV-Vis), X-rayDiffraction (XRD), etc. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of nano silver wasdiscussed. The results of the studies showed that during the preparation processHBP-NH2played the role of trapping, reducing and stabilizing agents of silver particles. The average diameter of nano silver was within15nm and its size distribution wasconcentrated. The produced nano silver also had good evenness, dispersion and stability.A suitable antibacterial finishing process was proposed to treat polyester fabricswith nano silver solutions. The optimal processing parameter of the finishing processwas investigated. And the structure and properties of the treated polyester fabrics werealso studied. The optimal technology was showed as follows: the polyester fabrics weretreated with2g/L HBP-NH2and0.07g/L silver nitrate with the dipping temperature25℃and the dipping time30min. The results also showed that nano silver particleswere successfully loaded on the surface of the fiber. A large number of nano silver particles dispersed uniformly on the surface of the treated polyester fiber. The treatedpolyester fabrics had good antibacterial performances and washing durability. Thebacterial inhibition ratio was above99%. The treated fabrics had more than98%bacterial inhibition ratio even after50washing cycles. The antibacterial finish had littleimpact on the mechanical and dyeing properties of the fabrics. The moisture and waterabsorption, water vapor permeability, ultraviolet resistance, wrinkle resistance andantistatic properties of the treated fabrics were enhanced slightly. The gas permeabilitydeclined slightly, and the fabric style was less affected.
