Methylaniline is a non metallic aniline antiknock which may increase the gasoline octanevalue significantly. Although methylaniline has excellent antiknock properties,but it is highlytoxic and would cause poisoning and environmental hazards. Thus, the abuse of it is a seriousthreat to the safety of human life. Methylaniline additive has been extensively applied in thedomestic reconcile gasoline, but the national standard does not make the additive index limitsclearly. And there is no efficient and accurate detection method for methylaniline so far. Thispaper used GC MS, infrared spectrometry, capillary gas chromatography for testingmethylaniline. In the batch tests, the combination of infrared spectroscopy and capillary gaschromatography for qualitative and quantitative analysis of methyl aniline in gasoline isprefered. Which gives a fast, accurate, efficient and economic method. GC MS, infraredspectrometry, capillary gas chromatography methods were used to establish the the calibrationcurves of N methylaniline, o toluidine, p toluidine, m toluidine, aniline, andN,N dimethylaniline respectively. A detailed compare of advantages and disadvantages ofthese three methods is also given. Infrared spectroscopy may give a to gasoline methyl anilinerapid qualitative analysis of methyl aniline in gasoline, but it is not suitable for quantitativeanalysis. GC MS method can only be used for nalysis of methyl aniline with the disadvantageof complicated operation and time consuming. Gas chromatography with flame ionizationdetector (GC/FID) method was successfully applied in the determination of methyl anilineadditives in gasoline. The gasoline samples may analyzed directly by GC/FID usingacetophenone was added as internal standard. The calibration curves of aromatic amines werelinear in the concentration range of150g L-1with detection limits of0.070.34g L-1. Thespiked recoveries ranged from94.3%117.1%with relative standard deviations of1.8%3.9%.
