The adhesion between brass-plated steel cords and the rubber skim stock in tiresplays a major role in determining the performance and the service life of tires, and alsothe incentive to replace resorcinol altogether from the rubber formulation comes fromthe health hazards associated with its use. So this study was undertaken to investigatethe role of the newly developed environment-friendly adhesive PN760on theadhesion properties between nature rubber and brass. The effects of PN760, HMMM,zinc oxide, epoxy natural rubber and PDM on the adhesion properties and mechanismof rubber-brass was studied. The experimental result was briefly described as follows:(1) Initial experiments were conducted to study the effect of adhesion systemPN760and HMMM on the adhesion properties of rubber-brass; the mechanism ofrubber-brass adhesion was also be investigated by SEM and EDX. The results showedthat both PN760and HMMM extended the curing time of rubber compound, and theoptimum ratio of PN760/HMMM is3:2. Based on the SEM/EDX data, a possiblemechanism was proposed to explain the adhesion between rubber and brass. Therubber-brass interface and adhesion was improved by different type of CuxSinter-reacted rubber-brass layer formation.(2) the effect of content of zinc oxide and different shape of zinc oxide on theadhesion properties and mechanism between rubber and brass-plated steel cord werestudied, the result showed that the zinc oxide restricted the CuxS inter-reactedrubber-brass layer formation, the rubber compound have the optimum initial and agedadhesion between rubber and brass-plated steel cord when the zinc oxide is6phr, thedifferent shape of zinc oxide have no much influence on the initial and aged adhesionbetween rubber and brass-plated steel cord.(3) The adhesion between a rubber compound containing epoxidized naturalrubber (ENR) and a brass-plated steel cord was studied to shed light on the role ofENR for the improvement of adhesion. The result showed that with the addition ofENR in the rubber compound caused cure rate to decrease, an improvement ofadhesion was obvious with low loading of ENR at the range of2phr.(4) At last, the effect of PDM on the initial and aged adhesion between rubber and brass-plated steel cord was studied, the result showed that he cure rate of rubbercompound decreased and the adhesion between rubber and brass improved with theincreasing of PDM content at the range of0-2phr.
