The preparation of waterborne epoxy-graft-acrylic resin by solutionpolymerization was investigated respectively in this paper. Through the determinationof the acidvalue, the structure of product identified by FTIR and molecular weightdistribution of characterizing. The result showed that grafted reacting has occurredindeed. The effect of the initiator species, epoxy value, neutralizer and theneutralization degree to the properties of the waterborne and coatting had beeninvestigated. The waterborne epoxy-graft-acrylic resin was prepared by using the theory offree-radical polymerization in this paper. With epoxy E-44as modifying agent, acrylate acid(AA), styrene(ST), hydroxyethyl methacrylate-β(β-HEA), butylacrylate(BA) etc as monomers, tert-amyl acetate peroxide(TAPA) as initiator andpropylene glycol ether(PnB) as the solvent. This article discussed the reaction mechanism of the system. The structure ofepoxy-graft-acrylic resin and epoxy-acrylic resin were characterized by FTIR. Theresult showed that chemical reacting between epoxy and acrylic resin has occurredindeed. And function group–COOH and epoxy chain link who enduesepoxy-graft-acrylic resin hydrophilic property is found in the FTIR curves. The effect of epoxy resin E-51, E-44, E-20, E-12and content of the epoxy resin tothe viscocity and stability of the waterborne dispersion was investigated. And the bestepoxy resin content was: E-44content is about6%-15%of monomer. The effect of N,N-dimethylethanolamine (DMEA), triethylamine, diisopropylamine, NaOH these fourneutralizing agents to the particle sizes, stability of the waterborne and theelectrochemical property of the coatting were investigated. The experiment resultsindicated that when using triethylamine as neutralizing agent, the stability of thewaterborne and the water resistant, alkali resistant of the coatting are better than theother neutralizing agent. The effect of the different neutralization degree to theparticlesize of the waterborne dispersions was investigated. The results showed thatthis system suitable for110%neutralization degree. The effect of the acid content tothe stability of the waterborne was investigated. The results showed that the stability ofthe waterborne would be better when the acrylate acid content increased, the bestcontent was3.89%.
