The lump activated carbon with good mechanical and adsorption propertieswere successfully prepared through two kinds of methods.The influence of thepreparation methods and conditions on structure and properties of porous blockcarbons were investigated. The various adsorption properties of prepared sampleswere tested as well.Powdery activated carbon and green petroleum coke were respective applied asmain raw materials, the influence of the non-adsorbed material type and amount ofbinder (Including CMC, asphalt and modified phenolic resin, etc.), activator(Including potassium hydroxide, sodium carbonate and zinc chloride, etc.) andadditive (Including bamboo charcoal, green petroleum coke, calcined petroleumcoke, sawdust and ceramic powder, etc.) on the adsorption properties and strength oflump activated carbons were investigated.To produce lump activated carbons withthe function of indoor air purification and decoration,which has a requisite strength,favorable absorption properties, can be recycled, good processing performance andlow cost.Green petroleum coke which through0.15mm sieve was chosen as raw material,while KOH was used as main chemical activation reagent. The lump activatedcarbon sample was prepared successfully when after the dry mixing, the ratio ofKOH to green petroleum coke was4, chemical activation temperature was800℃andpreserved for90min. The BET surface area, total pore volume, benzene adsorption,iodine adsorption and methylene blue adsorption of lump activated carbon is1438.99m2.g-1,0.7013ml.g-1,828mg.g-1,1703mg.g-1and918mg.g-1.Homemade powdery activated carbons with excellent adsorption properties wasapplied as main raw materials, the asphalt was applied as the binder with massfraction25%added (fiducial raw material is100%),potassium hydroxide wasapplied as the activator with the mass fraction5%added, sawdust was applied as theadditive with the mass fraction25%added. The lump activated carbon sample wasprepared after the milling kneading,pressure molding of15MPa and chemicalactivation and oxygen isolated carbonization at800℃. The adsorption performanceand strength test results showed that the sample could have the formaldehydeadsorption value of239mg.g-1,the compressive strength of2.7MPa, the BET specificsurface area of1598.74m2.g-1, the total pore volume of0.8456ml.g-1.Green petroleum coke material which contains less ash content and highervolatile content was applied as the adsorption basic mass, the high-temperature modified asphalt was applied as the binder with mass fraction25%added,potassiumhydroxide was applied as the activator with the mass fraction10%added,ceramicpowder was applied as the additive with the mass fraction20%added. The lumpactivated carbon sample was prepared after the milling kneading,pressure molding of15MPa and chemical activation and oxygen isolated carbonization at800℃. Theadsorption performance and strength test results showed that the sample could havethe toluene adsorption value of41.9mg.g-1,the compressive strength of8MPa, theBET specific surface area of571.58m2.g-1, the total pore volume of0.2760ml.g-1.
