In recent years, scientists have been focusing their intention on the research of POPs. Asthe main water source and dirty acception store of the major agricultural province AnHui, lakeChaohu was seriously contaminated by the OCPs. In order to do deeply research on the lakeChaohu, in this paper, several representative deposit sampling point which from the surfacesediment of the lake Chaohu, and the major rivers into the lake, as well as the sediment coresfrom lake Chaohu was selected to study the residue levels, the distribution characteristics aswell as the composition features of this area. The possible sources of the contamination werediscussed here, and the potential ecological risks were evaluated. The results were summarized as follows:1. In this paper,a gas chromatography-(tandem) mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) withthe special column of organochlorine pesticide residues analysis column: VF-1701as thechromatography column was developed. All of the20kinds of organochlorine pesticides weresensitively detected through the Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) mode.2. According to the analysis of the OCPs, the total concentration in the surface sedimentof lake Chaohu basin was ranged from0.94to86.27ng/g. And the total concentration in thesediment cores was0.03ng/g~61.89ng/g, which ranked in the world’s medium level.3. Based on the research of the OCPs in sediment, the pollution showed an obviouslyspatcial distribution: the OCPs pollutions in the west lake were more serious than in the eastlake, and the middle of the lake showed the lowest concentration. The content of OCPsbecame lower from the shore of lake to the center of the lake. Accoding to the viticaldistribution of the OCPs in the sediment cores, the pollutions began from the1950s whichwas interffered by human beings. Then the concentration reached to the highest level in the1980s. Due to the fobbiden of OCPs, the residue of the OCPs then declined to a balancecondition.4. Based on the analysis of the composition of OCPs in sediment, the predominatingcomponents of organochlorine pollution were the DDTs and BHCs. Through characteristicsof the degradation products of the compound, the resuilt showed that the DDTs pesticidemainly came from historical accumulation of the technical DDTs, and the BHCs pesticide came from the combination of historical accumulation of technical BHCs, as well as a newlyinput of LinDan..5. The standard of Ingersoll risk assessment was imported to evaluate the ecological riskof organochlorin pesticides in lake Chaohu, the conclutions showed the ecological risk in lakeChaohu was serious, and could not be ignored. The ecological risk was higher in the westlakes as well as its surrounded rivers than in the east lakes and its surrounded rivers except forthe Zhegao river. So the potential threat to the environment was serious, and correspondingmeasures must be toke to control the OCPs contamination immediately.
