Semi-solid metal forming(SSF) is a new metal forming technology and it had been de-veloped at1970s’. SSF have a great industrial interest because they have advantages such as reduction of macro-segregation, reduction of porosity, low forming efforts, pos-sesses excellent mechanical properties of castings and possibility of near-net shape forming, etc. SSF of aluminum alloys is urgently necessary in automobile industry, space industry and electronic information industry, etc. In this paper, the technology and the characteristics of SSF are introduced, and induction reheating of Semi-solid metal billet are studied, which is one key techniques in the SSF. Summed up the exist-ing research and the results achieved and on the basis of previous studies, the follow-ing design and research are conducted:1. A theoretical coil is designed by defining the quantitative relationship between bill-et length and coil length in order to reduce the axial temperature gradients in the billet, then the calculation for the design Inductor was carried out.2. The induction heating is reasonable simplification in order to derive a mathematic cal model, and the radial temperature distribution equation in the billet heating process is obtained.3. The temperature gradient on the radial of AlSi7Mg aluminum alloy billet and the time required to reheating to the target temperature under different induct heating condi-tion, such as different heating frequency、power and the impact of insulation on the heating have been simulated by the MATLAB software, using the mathematical model. To identify the reasonable induct heating condition and draw some referential conclu-sions.
