As the cradle of human life, the sea contains rich resources. But marine pollution especially coastal and estuarine eutrophication is becoming a serious problem with the development of industry and the effect of human activities. Therefore, water quality monitoring and management is particularly important. Traditional method of monitoring water quality is not only time-consuming, but also difficult to reflect the overall water quality. Remote sensing technology hasthe advantage of low cost, large range and is convenient for long-term ambulatory monitoring. It can provide timely information of monitoring target and hasgreat application value. Remote sensing technology can play the advantage andpotential which traditional water quality monitoring method cannot have. This paper based on the summary of current research on water quality remotesensing monitoring of domestic and international, reviews the available water qualityindex which can be monitor through remote sensing. This paper choices RiverDayang estuary as the experimental area, through the research of water quality indexremote sensing retrieval model and the analysis of the band and band combination, using regression analysis method, eatablishes remote sensing retrieval model ofchlorophyll, transparency, suspended matter and total nitrogen for HJ-1satellite bysynchronized measured spectral data and ground site collected water quality data.Furthermore, the precision of the model has been validated. This paper achieves thepurpose of using satellite image to monitor water quality and provides the referencefor water quality monitoring study on estuarine waters. Due to the spectralcharacteristics is not the same at different waters or in different seasons, and data islimited in this study, the practicability and universality of the established model is stillin need of further research.
