As an important organic intermediates,4,4’-biphenol has anti-aging, anti-oxidation, excellent heat resistance. It plays a key role in the development of many industries. Currently high purity4,4’-biphenol mainly used in the synthesis of liquid crystal polymer (LCP).LCP are widely used in electronics, automotive, fiber optics, electrical, chemical equipment and other fields. At present, our country’s high-purity4,4’-biphenoi mainly relied on imports.This paper, on the one hand, study on4,4’-biphenol (BP) prepared from waste LCP(PHBA-BP-PTA terpolymer) by hydrolysis process, on the other hand, study on synthesis of high-purity4,4’-biphenol too.4,4’-biphenol (BP) was prepared from waste LCP(PHBA-BP-PTA terpolymer)by hydrolysis process under atmospheric pressure using NaOH as catalyst,1,4-dioxane and water as solvent.The effects of catalyst and solvent on hydrolysis reaction were studied. Under the optimum condition of reaction temperature100℃, reaction time8h and ratio of reaction mixture: m (LCP): m (solvent): m (H2O): m (NaOH)=1:4:1.5:0.6, the hydrolysis efficiency of the LCP is over97%. With addition of HCl in the hydrolysate until pM=8.5,4,4’-biphen-ol precipitation was formed. After4,4’-biphenol was washed with water, dried and recrystallized in methanol. its purity could reach99.9%. The yield of4,4’-biphcnol from the LCP is70%.Using phenol and isobutylene as starting materials, allawing phenol to react with isobutylene in the presence of aluminum phenoxide, oxidizing the resulting reaction liquid in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, and debutylating the reaction liquid in the presence of a debutylation catalyst, product was purified by activated carbon adsorption, recrystallized from methanol. the product was identified by IR, NMR, MS. liquid chromatography to determine the purity is99.9%, the4.4’-biphenol Can be used to synthesize LCP. The yield is more than50%. This work designed a reasonable industrial route, and optimized conditions. Achieving the purpose of using cheap industrial raw materials to produce high value-added products.
