Along with the sweeping development of crystal engineering, the rational design and synthesis of coordination polymers by assembly reactions of metal ions with organic ligand is nowadays considered as one of the most popular fields, not only because of their intriguing architectures, but also because of their potential applications in luminescence, gas adsorption, magnetism, catalysis and other field.In this paper, we choice the rigid ligand (5-iipa) as the main ligand,4,4’-bipyridine (bpy),1,1’-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole)(bbi),1,10-phenanthroline (phen),1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa),1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)-benzene (p-bix),1,3-bi(4-pyridyl)propane)(bpp) as N-donor ancillary ligands. Eight novel heterometallic/homometallic complexes:{[Ag2(bpy)2][Cd(5-iipa)2]-4H2O}n (1),{[Ag2(bbi)2][Cd2(5-iipa)3]·2H2O}n (2),{[Ag2(phen)2][Cd(5-iipa)2]·H2O}n (3),[Ag2(5-iipa)(bbi)05]n (4),{[Ag(5-iipa)]·[Ag(bpa)]}n (5),[Ag4(5-iipa)2(p-bix)2]n(6),[Zn2(5-iipa)2(bpa)1.5·0.5(bpa)]n(7),[Zn2(5-iipa)2(bpp)2-H2O]n(8), have been obtained by hydro(solvo)thermal methold through the reactions of mixed ligands with silver(I), cadmium(II) and zinc(II) salts. Their structures have been characterized by element analysis, IR, single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses, powder X-ray diffractions (PXRD) and thermal analysis.The5-iipa ligand can adopt a variety of coordination modes, and iodine atom and oxygen atoms have potential capability of partaking in halogen bonding or connect the metal ions through weak interactions, so complexes1-8show diverse structural characteristics. Compound1constructs a unique host-guest structure, in which the host framework having voids filled with two kinds of metal-organic chains as guest within the same structure, the host and guest are associated together by Ag…O weak interactions and electrostatic interaction. Compound2displays a2-fold interpenetrating3D structure, then the whole structure can be simplified as a (2,3,4)-connected with a (122·16)(12)(42·6.122·14)(42-6-83)2(42·6)(8) point (Schlafli) symbol. Complex3exists a heterometallic layer, adjacent layers are interconnected through Ag…I weak interactions to get3D supramolecular structure. Compound4exhibits a2D structure, which are interconnected by O…I interaction to yield a3D supramolecular structure. In compound5,5-iipa connects Ag(I) ions to form a metal-organic chain, such chains are further united together to give birth to a2D layer, then the2D layers and (Ag-bpa)n polymer chains are interconnected by Ag…O weak interactions to form a3D supramolecular structure. Compound6displays a special3D structure, in which the layers are corresponded through [Ag2.5(p-bix)4] units forming the3D structure. Compound7exists a double-layer structure, which are interconnected by I…π interactions to give a3D supramolecular architectures. The layer of compound8is compose of (Zn-5-iipa)n chains and two kinds of different chiral (Zn-bpp)n chains, adjacent layers are constructed through I…π interactions to form a3D supramolecular structures.
