Multi-wall CNT features at its relatively great length-diameter ratio, remarkable mechanical property, which make it a research hot spot in mechanics and conductivity areas. To further develop and modify the properties of CNT, the surface modification and functionalization of CNT turn out to be a significant branch worldwide. This article covers aspects including the surficial acid oxidization, covalently grafted functional ized, decentralization in organic solvent and the enhancement of polymers, etc. Specifically, it contains as following:1. We utilized the mix bulk of concentrated sulfuric acid and nitric acid to acid oxidized the surface of CNT to generate a quantity number of function groups, thus we got acid oxidized, both-ends-open CNT with a certain length-diameter ratio.2. The hydroxyl group on the acid oxidized CNT served as a radical spot. After Polypropylene chloride grafted on these spots, the surficial covalently grafted CNTs were prepared, subsequently.3. We tested the decentralization of these modified CNTs.4. We tested the other properties of the modified CNT/polyurethane polymer compound.By the experimental method, we successfully grafted polypropylene chloride on the surface of carbon nanotubes, content of grafted polypropylene chloride is about47%. The decentralization of CNTs in multiple media got enhanced, and we successfully calculated the dispersion concentration of poly (propylene chloride)-grafted MWNT in solution in1,4-dioxane is24.35mg/ml. Abrasion performance and the mechanical strength of the polymer material got enhanced, which provided a novel method of altering the properties of CNTs.
