Along with the wider application of aramid fiber composites in the field of aerospace, bulletproof products, motor vehicle and others, demands for secondary processing of aramid fiber composites such as trimming, drilling, and arc processing are becoming more and more.Nevertheless, because this kind of material has characteristics of high hardness, strong wear resistance, high toughness and low interlaminar strength and there are no specific machining tools and design methods for machining tools, defects such as burrs, tear and delamination are prone to arise in the process of secondary processing, which can not be able to meet the processing requirements, processing efficiency and processing cost of the aramid fiber composites are severely restricted.According to the current situation of processing, combined with the subject project of the national major project and the project cooperating with China Aviation Industry Hafei Group, design criteria of diamond abrasive tools used for machining aramid fiber composites was put forward and diamond abrasive tools meeting the processing requirements of trimming, drilling and arc processing were developed in this paper on the basis of needs of national defense. The main research results in this paper are as follows:(1) Material properties of aramid fiber composites was analyzed by the method of flying shear test, and synthetic action of cutting and grinding was confirmed as the removal mechanism of this kind of material according to the analysis result. On this basis, one design criteria of diamond abrasive tools suitable for aramid fiber composites was put forward.(2) Diamond abrasive tools used for trimming, drilling and arc processing aramid fiber composites were designed and manufactured. According to the design criteria of diamond abrasive tools used for machining the aramid fiber composites, type and particle size of each abrasive tools were selected, structure of each abrasive tools were designed, and substrate material of each abrasive tools were selected. Electroplating parameters of each tools were optimized, through which the quality of diamond abrasive tools were enhanced.(3) Experiments of machining aramid fiber composites by using the developed diamond tools were carried out. Experiments result show that cutting force and cutting temperature can be significantly reduced by using developed diamond tools machining aramid fiber composites, and processing defects such as deckle edge and tear were effectively restrained.
