In this paper, the recent advances of the corrosion mechanism and protective measures of the lining material in aluminum melting furnace are summarized, which also including the character of alumina hollow ball and aluminum titanate material and the sol-gel coating process and the research progress on lining materials. Titanium sol modified alumina hollow ball was prepared by sol-gel method that introduce a layer of aluminum titanate on the surface. In this work, the modified alumina hollow ball is aggregate, and aluminum titanate and alumina powder are the base material. The experiment factors (i.e., ratio of aluminum titanate, content of alumina powder) are investigated for the performance of castable, bauxite castable, corundum castable and aluminum titanate castable.These results show that a titanium sol film was formed on the surface of alumina hollow ball. In the process of thermal treatment at1350℃, rutile titania formed in the decomposition of titanium sol could react with alumina hollow ball matrix to obtain aluminum titanate. It made great improvement in compression strength of alumina hollow ball. The content of aluminum titanate has a great influence on the physical properties of the material, which have a close relationship with the temperature. The increase of aluminum titanate content could improve the performance anti-wetting of liquid aluminum in castable. Aluminum titanate affected the physical properties of bauxite-based castable and alumina based castable. The addition of a small amount of aluminum titanate in castable did not influence the anti-wetting property of liquid aluminum.
