In this paper, total organic carbon (TOC) content was used to measure theamount of water soluble organic compounds (WSOCs), and effects of different factorson TOC content are examined. Moreover, whether ultrasonic would improve theproduction of TOC content and the separation of organic matters were also studied, and results were as follow:1) TOC content from electrolysis was larger than that from soaking, and anodematerials with electrocatalytic characteristics could increase the TOC content, such asFe and Ni. The TOC content increased with time, temperature and current density, while it decreased with increasing NaOH concentration. In addition, the TOC contentfrom unit mass coal after electrolysis increases with the CWS concentration firstly, and then decreases.2) The lower the ash content in coal, the higher of the TOC content in filtrate, theexistence of the ash in coal could restrain its electroxidation. The apparent activationenergy for the generation of organics from soaking and soaking with ultrasonic are19.98kJ/mol and18.17kJ/mol, respectively. While the apparent activation energy forthe generation of organics from electrolysis and electrolysis with ultrasonic are28.24kJ/mol and27.43kJ/mol, respectively. Effect of ultrasound for the improvement ofTOC content from soaking was small, while effect of ultrasound for the improvementof TOC content from electrolysis was large.3) When the cathode and anode departments were not separated, TOC contentfrom electrolysis was higher. The organics from soaking and electrolysis were mostlyhumic acid, which would be precipitated out by acid acidification. The infraredspectrum of coal samples showed that coal structure was not changed, whichaccounted for the low conversion of coal to WSOCs.
