In this study, we take Tianjin sepiolite as raw materials, through the physical and chemical methods ,analyze its phase composition.Purification and modification process are carried out to study the friction properties of the sepiolite powder added to the base oil as lubricating oil additives.X ray diffraction indicates this sepiolite mineral contain three different phase: sepiolite, dolomite, quartz. The sepiolite mineral is purified by acid treatment and centrifugal sedimentation.Acid treatment indicates optimized acid consistency is 1.0mol/L。To improve sepiolite’s dispersibility in the lubricate medium,we do surface modification to the sepiolite.Experiment show that 10 percent of span60 have the ideal effect.Friction experiment result indicate purified sepiolite have well performance of friction reduction.The oil sample which is added by 0.5 percent purified sepiolite,have the most effective performance,average friction coefficient is 0.0548.Compare to the friction coefficient of base oil, average friction coefficient of the oil sample which is added by 0.5 percent purified sepiolite play down by 43.6 percent; Average friction coefficient of the oil sample which is added by 0.1 percent and 1 percent purified sepiolite are 0.0776 and 0.0642.The attrition spots of purified sepiolite are clearly smaller than that of no-purified sepiolite and basic oil.Besides ,the attrition trail of purified sepiolite is shallower.So the purified sepiolite have excellent friction-reduction effect.Gear wheel experiment result show that after adding 0.5 percent purified sepiolite into basic oil , electric current and power of gear wheel friction machine both have a fall compared to that of basic oil. After 180 minutes experiment , vibration and noise lower than the base oil (16μm and 87.5db), indicating that it have more obvious and certain energy-efficient damping, noise reduction effect.
