High voltage(HV) equipments will produce arc discharge because of insulation defect. In the process of the discharges, it will radiate lots of light wave, which is rich in ultraviolet(UV) light. The detection of UV radiation among arc discharge can be used to infer the safe operation status of HV electrical equipments. According to the study of UV spectrum characteristics of arc discharge and UV radiation detection technology, an UV radiation detection system based on channel photomultiplier is designed for arc discharge detection of HV equipments. The mechanism and the characteristics of arc discharge are discussed, and the problem of environmental noise interference in randomly discharge detection of electrical equipments is solved effectively. The response speed of light radiation signal and detection sensitivity is improved, and the effectivity of the detection system is verified experimentally. The main work and achievements of the research are shown below:(1)The mathematical model and spectrum characteristics of the arc discharge from the basic theory of HV equipments arc discharge are researched, and the advantage of detection arc discharge in“solar blind”UV band is explained.(2)According to the disadvantage of photodiode and conventional PMT in sensitivity and linearity, a detection system based on channel photomultiplier is designed to capture the UV radiation of arc discharge. The UV radiation waveform generated by discharge is displayed by LCD, and the amplitude changing of the waveform is used to represent the UV radiation power of arc discharge and provide a reference for the evaluation of HV equipments discharge.(3)Discharge experiments included different types of electrical discharge generating device are made and the experimental results show that the system can detect weak UV light of arc discharge with high sensitivity and linearity, and can be used in arc discharge detection of HV electrical equipments.By experiments it has been shown that the sensitivity of the detection system is better than 1pw and the detection range is more than 50m. It has advantage of high linearity within the detection range. The system can be applied to actual detection on arc discharge of HV electrical equipments and have a wide application prospect.
