Currently, the pipeline has been widely used in many fields such as oil and gas, chemicals, coal, urban water supply, gas supply, heating, sewage and other projects. The pipelinetransportation increasingly plays a major role in the transport of oil, gas and hazardous chemicals. And at the same time the pipeline is an important part of the urban infrastructure. Damagedetection will be needed where are pipelines used. With the gradual expansion of the pipelineproject in China, how to effectively and quickly provide a good test for the existing pipeline andthe forthcoming completed pipeline system has become one of the urgent problems of thepipeline industry.Based on previous studies on the guided wave propagated in the pipeline, the main purposeof this paper is to do experimental study on damage detection in viscous liquid-filled pipes usingultrasonic guided waves technique. Firstly, based on the experimental study of ultrasonic guidedwave propagation characteristics of oil-filled pipes, it is found the signal of70kHz and10cyclesis the optimal excitation signal. Ultrasonic guide wave propagation characteristics of hollowpipes, water-filled pipes and oil-filled pipes are compared and analyzed. It is found thatultrasonic guided wave attenuation of oil-filled pipes is the best. Finally, damage detectionexperiment is studied on the viscous liquid-filled pipes using ultrasonic guided wave. Theexperimental damage location calculated by the defective location of the viscous liquid-filledpipeline is basically agreed with the actual position.
