The Xin Jiekou Commercial Street is one of the most famous traditionalcommercial areas in Beijing, featuring in its streetscape full of small shops. Under thebackground of the reconstruction of Beijing old city center, the reconstruction projectof Xin Jiekou Conmmercial Street started in2002. During this project, the north partof the street was bordened, small shops tore down and four big shopping malls built.The old and new, small and big commercial facilities stand on different sides of thestreet.Under the analysis of the history, current situation and further planning of XinJiekou Commercial Street, this thesis focus on the conflict between new and oldcommercial facilities. Characters of both areas are deeply analyzed with field researchresult, sorted in two catelogies: the special features and commercial features. Thesmall commercial facilities rooted in Xin Jiekou Commercial Street features in itsfriendly scale and interesting layout pattern. It also suits the demand of localcustomers. Old, out of date outlooking is their shortcomings. On the other hand, thenew built large commercial buildings have great advantages of appearance. But theirbig scale disturbs the spacial structure of the street. And they failed to fit the appetiteof local customers. The co-existing of these two types of commercial facilities endsup in a street lacking features.Based on the analysis of the conflict, this thesis proposed several advices for thefurther improving of Xin Jiekou Commercial Street. The advantages of theco-existing of two types of commercial facilities are dug out from their currentconflict. These analysis and advices would be of use to the other reconstructionprogram of old commercial district in Beijing.
