Helicopter exerts great significance in military and civil industry by its outstanding feature ofhovering, low altitude speed and better mobility. However, conventional helicopter is stillincomparable to fixed wing aircraft because of limitation of local shock-stall, air flow separation androtor lean forward. To make a general observation to high speed tilt-rotor aircraft researched byforeign countries, it is easy to find that tilt-rotor aircraft,ABC-type rotor aircraft and compound highspeed helicopter are the most typical examples. And among them, compound high speed helicoptershows outstanding advantage in flight performance, economical efficiency and safety.Based on domestic helicopter, this article makes reference to X3helicopter’s ‘two sides’propulsion concept’ and transforms it. Thus, a preliminary plan of compound high speed helicoptercomes out.Flight dynamics characteristics research is also conducted on this plan. This includes analysis tocontrol strategy design, balance calculation, stability and maneuverability and lift-drag characteristics.It mainly solves the following aspect during the process from hovering to high speed forward:effective control concern of both sides propulsion device realizing rotor pneumatic torque balancedand forward flight pulling force; lift conversion and match concern of helicopter rotor/wing; flightcontrol and stability; promotion effect of modified conventional helicopter’s flight speed by adoptingthis structure.Research on this plan’s flight dynamics characteristics is conducted respectively from thefollowing two aspects: rotor driven by engine power and autorotation; airframe after drag reductiondesign. This further verifies the feasibility of this compound configuration in realizing helicopter’shigh speed flight.
