In the heavy truss structure, there are some large gusset plates connecting themembers. The plates have a larger size. The 《Code for design of steel structures》(GB50017-2003) gives the effective length of the web member by ignoring the impactof the gusset plate. The Specification made no rules on the web member in the trusswhit such a gusset plate of large size. But the gusset plates may cause some affect on theweb member in bearing the axial load. And the Speciation also did not refer how tocheck the stability of this type gusset plate connected with web member by bolts. Bothof them are concerned by some scholars. This paper makes a discussion on theserespects.Based on a truss project with a large gusset plate connected with web member bybolt group, this paper makes a research on the web member of the truss by building afinite element mode using the ANSYS10.0. The single parameter analysis is made todetermine the relations of the geometric factors to the effective length of the webmember, and derive a formula to compute the effective length factor. In addition, makesome research on the stability of the gusset plate using finite element mode in itsthickness, yield point of its material, the length of the free edge of the plate and thewidth of the connected web member. The different calculation methods in checking thestability of the gusset plate at home and abroad are compared with the data obtained byANSYS10.0.
