In this paper, the effect of the concerned key parameters on the sound radiation of railway wheels is comprehensively analyzed. A FE-BE model of a wheel with straight web is developed to calculate the natural frequencies and directivities, the results of which are compared with results of laboratory tests. A good agreement is found between the simulation model predicted and experimental results. Thus, based on the reliable simulation results, patterns and characteristics of directivity are clear. Through the above two aspects of research, reference to low noise design and development is provided. Specific contents as follows:The effect of the concerned key parameters on the sound radiation of railway wheels is comprehensively analyzed. The parameters include the axle load, the radial size of wheel web, the radial size due to width of rim, and the thickness and type of web. The study of mechanism of effects of these parameters on the sound radiation of wheels is further carried out. As the results, increasing the axle load, thickness of web or decreasing the radial size of web, the radial size due to width of rim, have a positive effect on reduction of the sound radiation. The levels of sound radiation of the wheels with curved web and doubled-S web are close. Compared to the wheels with the these two kinds of webs, the level of sound radiation of the wheel with straight web is the lowest.Based on the hybrid FEM-BEM method, a vibration and sound radiation model is developed to calculate the directivity of wheel sound radiation with straight web. The accuracy of the present model is verified by the test. Combined the numerical simulation with the test, a more detailed directivity is described at the resonant modes of the wheel, which have main contributions to the sound radiation of the wheel, and the interaction of the sound radiation and its direction is investigated in detail.
