Target tracking system is one of the most important part of the vehicle air-defense missile system, whose mission is to track and sight target. The precision of the target tracking system depends chiefly upon the target tracking algorithm. Therefore, studying the target tracking algorithm can make significant practical and theoretical significance for improving the combat capability and response time of the weapon system.In this paper, the main features of infrared image are summarized firstly. We analyze the fundamental characteristics of the infrared radiation of targets and background systematically. Images are pretreated by median filter and direct sampling pyramid decomposition to lay a good foundation for the next work. The traditional threshold segmentation algorithm based on two-dimensional maximal variance between-class is improved based on the region division of two-dimensional histogram for the aim of detecting target precisely and rapidly. Aiming at the common problem of target changing and partial occlusion in the process of infrared dynamic tracking, a weighted function based on the distance of each pixel to the template center is put forward. And the traditional mean absolute difference (MAD) algorithm is improved to solve the interference. For template update an adaptive template update strategy is introduced which can adaptively correct template through the analysis of the relation between the current frame matching coefficient and the updating threshold values.All the algorithm proposed in this paper is simulated firstly in the MATLAB simulation environment to prove the correctness of the algorithm, and the target detection algorithm is implemented in DSP hardware environment. The experimental results show that the accuracy and the stability of our algorithm can satisfy the requirements of light vehicle air-defense missiles weapon system during continuous tracking.
