Weaving section is one of the components of expressway system.Weavingsections are the areas formed when the paths of two or more traffic streams crosswithout the aid of traffic control facilities in the same driving direction, along thelong road. When a merging area is followed immediately by a diverging area,or anon-ramp follows an off-ramp immediately and an auxiliary lane is used as theconnection between them, the weaving section is formed. And the weaving sections ofhalf-cloverleaf interchanges are regarded as the research object in this thesis.Traffic capacity of expressway weaving sections is studied in this paper.Becausefinancial crisis has created the opportunity to the highway construction in China, thetotal mileages of our country’s highway has already jumped to the second place of theworld, but at the same time the loss of property and personnel caused by the trafficaccidents is also increasing steadily.Domestic and international researches show thatwhether urban fast road or expressway, weaving sections are always theaccident-prone area of road. And the accidents not only result in the damage ofpersonal safety and property, but also often have a great impact on the running ofentire road network of the traffic. Therefore,a study of traffic capacity of weavingsections has important significance.Firstly, previous research on weaving sections all over the world aresummarized. there exist several methods for weaving section analysis anddesign.Secondly, the typical configuration of type I is confirmed to be the object ofcapacity study.Traffic operation characteristics are analyzed from field data ofweaving operation; With statistical methods and regression techniques the rules offlow rate for the weaving sections lanes are found. Influence factors of trafficoperating in weaving sections are held and analyzed from above study.Thirdly, thispaper develops a base model based on the suggested values of weaving area capacityby HCM2000.Results show that the hyperbolic model yields a good illustration ofrelationship between weaving capacity and weaving length, and that the modelparameters can be calibrated through a multi-linear regression by considering factorslike weaving types, weaving flow ratios, number of weaving lanes, and freespeeds. Finally,a demonstration in capacity analysis of an expressway interchangeweaving from Shaoyang to Pingshang shows the model is applicable elsewhere aswell....
