With the large grid interconnection and high-capacity, long-distance transmission system development, the grid has a higher demand for power quality. The use of Controlled Shunt Reactor can effectively solve the problem of reactive power compensation and voltage control at the ultra high voltage (UHV) system. So research on Controlled Shunt Reactor in UHV system is important. This paper focuses on the study of the Controlled Shunt Reactor communication monitoring system in UHV system. This paper introduces the overall structure, the function of each unit and its system structure of Controlled Shunt Reactor communication monitoring system, and focus on local protocol converter and wave recording and playback system.Because of the communication monitoring system of the Controlled Shunt Reactor needs to be connected with other vendors’ equipment, computers and the equipment of original substation, in additional the protocol and communication medium are complex, diverse and difficult to be unified. So the interface problem is also complicated. According to this situation, the communication management software needs to be developed for realizing a variety of protocol and media conversion between different manufacturer equipment, and for flexibly connecting devices with existing equipments. Therefore, the local protocol conversion device is as the first research emphasis in this paper, and firstly the hardware operation environment of the protocol converter is introduced; Secondly, the software design process of the protocol converter is described.In order to improve power grid management and control level, and to facilitate the analysis of primary equipment fault, abnormal and the corresponding secondary device behavior and state, in the different voltage levels of the substation, especially the UHV substation, the wave recording and playback system has become an important secondary equipment, and provides strong technical support to analysis of power system accident morphology, development, nature and the line inspection positioning of the line fault. Therefore the wave recording and playback system of Controlled Shunt Reactor is the second research emphasis to be study in this paper. Firstly the operation characteristic of wave recording and playback system of Controlled Shunt Reactor is analyzed; Secondly, the software design process of the wave recording and playback system is described.The communication monitoring system has successfully applied to the Controlled Shunt Reactor equipment in UHV power system. And the UHV demonstration project has been successfully operated. The operating personnel can not only realize the real-time monitoring on information of remote measure and communication, but also make online control to switch and other operation equipment by the used of communication monitoring system protocol conversion. Between the devices commissioning process, the staff can timely find the problem and reproduce the problem through the wave recording and playback system, so the problem can be repeated to research and test, and eventually solve these problems, and improve the work efficiency to save time.
