With the rapid industrial growth in China and the exploitation of non-ferrous metalliferous mines like the large-scale outdoor iron ore etc, the original transportation carriers and road conditions have greatly limited the transport of metallic mineral and restricted production. Currently, the large self-discharging wagons used in the field of mines in China are mainly imported from overseas companies. It is full of challenges and opportunities to Yongji Company as a manufacturer of a traction motor applied with self-discharging wagon and as a manufacturer of a motor of special type in this particular field. This paper focuses on the design and research on traction motors of large self-discharging wagons in the field of mines and the design of motors at590kw are made based on the master schedule. This paper first introduces the background of the subject as well as the strategic importance of the project to Yongji Company. Details are also shown in this paper concerning the design process of traction motors applied with large self-discharging wagons in mining area, which include the calculation and decision of the main dimensions, armature stamping, ideas taken for check of the commentators, design and calculation of the slot-type stator lamination, calculation of magnetic path, calculation of circuit, calculation of armature reaction and calculation of performance, etc. This paper also covers the selection of lamination material, rotor material, shaft material and permanent-magnet material. Meanwhile, tests are done in terms of the performance after the trial manufacture of motors. At present, the traction motors have substituted the imported ones. The trial operation of the motors was a great success and good results were received.
