The performance of a car largely depends on the matching level between engine and transmission system. In recent years, with the rapid development of the automobile industry, the numbers of vehicle increase substantially in the world, so the energy and environmental crisis become more and more obvious. It brings new challenge to the automobile power and transmission system. However, for quite a long period of time, internal combustion engines are still the car’s main source of power, therefore, the research of engine and transmission matching is particularly important, it exists the reasonable matching level problem between improving of the power and economical performance and emission reduction. Power and economical performance of a car largely depends on the matching level between engine and transmission system. Only a good engine matches one kind of reasonable transmission system, so as to play to the best performance.This paper systematically introduces the basic theory of the metal belt type continuously variable transmission, including the basic components of the CVT working principle, geometric relationships, and control technology. According to the experimental data of the engine, it fits a mathematical model of output torque and fuel consumption model of the engine by using three spline interpolations.This Paper analyzes the control strategies of the speed ratio of the different working conditions such as the start, acceleration, stable driving and slow down. It sets up a vehicle model, makes simulation analysis under a variety of conditions by using the GT-drive software. It makes simulation calculation for the vehicle’s power and economical performance, and then analyzes the results. The original car used a five-speed manual transmission, by analyzing results of simulation of vehicle equipped with the CVT compares with the original car. it indicates that the performance assembly CVT vehicles have improved to some extent.
