At present, China’s large-span suspension bridge design and construction level is rising. As a large number of long-span suspension bridges are gradually opened to traffic, China quickly enters into the ranks of the great bridge power. However, the durability of the main cable still lacks sufficient research. Due to various corrosion of main cable, frequent accidents occured, which then affected the safety throughout the whole life of the suspension bridge. Therefore, research on the durability of the main cable is extremely urgent.Many instances have proved that the traditional main cable protection system can not completely prevent corrosion, only to slow down the rate of it. Therefore, it is necessary to develop and apply the main cable dehumidification system. The dehumidification system is a system where dry air can be entered into the sealed main cable, and then keeps the internal space of the main cable dry.According to the corrosion types of main cable wire and the deficiencies of traditional anti-corrosion technology of main cable of suspension bridges at home and abroad, this paper described the dehumidification drying protection method of main cable, with Xinghai Bay Bridge as an example. It also introduced and analyzed the design features, construction points, and the maintenance and management of the dehumidification system of main cable.The corrosion of the main cable wire of suspension bridge is a common problem, so it attracts more and more attention. To maintain intactness of main cables and hangers of suspension bridge and enhance their durability is a continuous and systemic work, across the whole process of the serviceability of the suspension bridge. For bridge designers and engineers, durability analysis should be taken as design guide, and corrosion and fatigue prevention should be chosen as research basis. And constant inspection is also needed during service life to maintain the cables and hangers to work in good conditions, to achieve structural durability and security, and finally to create social and economic benefits.
