The novel arch bridge studied in this paper is designed with sloped suspenders and arches with skew axis curves. The bridge has a unique shape and is aesthetically pleasing as well as fulfilling all the design functions and creating environmental harmony. However, it also brings a high level of complexity in optimizing the structural form and performing structural analysis and design.Although there are several engineering examples for such a new bridge in the domestic, the corresponding research is in start level, and the existing literature more focuses on the introduction of the application and engineering practice experience of the bridge rather than its theoretical analysis and research. In order to promote the application of the new bridge actively and carefully, combined with the engineering practice, the structure optimization and load test of the novel arch bridge are studied in detail. The main contents of this thesis are as follows:(1) Summarized the development and research situation of novel arch bridge, expounded the theory of the arch axis curve. Deduced second order differential equation of novel arch bridge, simplified the equation for elementary function by a reasonable project hypothesis, and drew the specific parameters of structure optimization analysis:rise-span ratio and slope of suspenders.(2) Expounded the theory of the structure optimization design of bridge. And then, a novel arch bridge in Wuhan was selected as the case study, and its finite element model was established by the use of software Midas/Civil. Carried out optimization analysis for the shape of the arch axis, the slope of suspenders and rise-span ratio of the arch. Six suspender slopes and three cable intervals were analyzed numerically and stress/deflection results in critical members were compared, from which an optimized design was proposed.(3) Discussed the key points of the design and construction of the southern Si-xin road bridge. These numerical results were verified by the field tests of the bridge after the completion of its construction.At last, the author summarized some pertinent countermeasures for the design of novel arch bridge. The study of this thesis has some guidance and reference values for the design, construction and test of this kind of bridge.
