The progressive collapse of a building is initiated by an event that causes local damages which the structural system cannot absorb or contain, and that subsequently propagates throughout the structural system, or a major portion of it, leading to a final damage state that is disproportionate to the local damage that initiated it. Progressive collapse of a building could lead to a large number of deaths and injuries, and serious loss of properties. Therefore, researchers and engineers paid and are still paying more and more attention on how to prevent such events. Up to now, a lot of research has been done and the collapse-resistant design of struetures has been set up in the United States and some European countries. In China, research of progressive collapse is rather late and limited. Based on this condition, this paper will describe the work that we have done to prevent progressive collapse. The main contents of this pper are as follows:(1) Rerencing international research findings on resisting progressive collapse and combining the specific demand of alternative defensive ability, three methods is summarized to analyze the alternative defensive ability:the alternate load path method, the specific local resistance method and the indirect design method. By numerical research, the alternate load path method can be used to simulate the process of collapse, and is suitable for structural failure analysis under any environment.(2) The deformation of the reinforced concrete frame structures is studied by experimental and numerical methods. For more accurate analysis of frame structures under lagre deformation and rotation, non-linear finite element analysis program of reinforced concrete structures is improved by changing the constitutive model of the material.(3) Based on the basic theory of reinforced concrete finite element method, a reasonable model of reinforced concrete frame structure is established. ABAQUS software is used to verify the progressive collapse test of Hunan University.(4) Based on ABAQUS software, using Alternate Path Method, the capacity to resist progressive collapse of a9-storey RC frame building in Hainan province is analyzed. Finally, the content of this thesis is summarized and some problems, which need further study, are proposed.
