The paper researched the operational characteristics of the wind farm and relay configuration based on the direct drive permanent magnet synchronous wind turbine (D-PMSG).Firstly, by use of the PSCAD/EMTDC establishing the stand-alone simulation model of D-PMSG, studied the steady-state operating characteristics of the D-PMSG and verified the correctness of the model; Researched the transient operating characteristics of the single phase, two-phase and three-phases short-circuit fault based on the stand-alone simulation model of D-PMSG; Establishing the wind farm model of D-PMSG, researched the impact on wind farm short-circuit current in different wind speed, the different capacities,and different type of fault; Studied the failure characteristics of D-PMSG and DFIG in two and three-phase short-circuit fault, comparative analysis of the physical similarities and differences of the two wind turbine. Analysis of factors affecting the fault current of the wind farm, studied the simulation of actual wind farm protection configuration scheme. Proposed improved method for the lack of configuration of the actual wind farm protection, and verified its reasonableness and effectiveness.
