With the development of smart grid, intelligent devices on the entire grid of time synchronization system accuracy requirements are increasing.This paper first briefly describes the modern power system development and the concept of intelligent substation, analyzing the connotations and technical features of the smart substations; technical standard IEC61850-based substation, while analysis of the smart substations under the IEC61850standard time model and its synchronization requirements of the model; Secondly, introduced the concept of time, a common clock source and expounded the principle of clock synchronization theory. briefly introduced several kinds of timing system and Several used commonly time synchronization mode of Substation, Presented a timing system and the disadvantages of the traditional time synchronization mode. Then it points out the IEC61588network is the future developing direction of intelligent substation. Again, elaborated IEC61588(PTP) of the background and the agreement features, in-depth study of the PTP synchronization principle and key technologies, algorithms, and pointed out the PTP synchronization algorithm, given the improved algorithm. Further study of influence on accuracy of the factors and the compensation method. Finally, researched deeply the IEC61588network system’s core technology-the local clock design.
