With superior performance, serpentine belt drive system is widely used in enginefront-end accessory drive system. As an important engine part, serpentine belt drive system’snoise and vibration have a major impact on the engine’s noise and vibration. Concerning thenoise and vibration problems of the serpentine belt drive system, this paper carried out thefollowing work:1. A unified model of serpentine belt drive system’s rotational vibration is developed,considering the belt’s creeping and pulley’s axle damping. The model can be used to calculatethe rotational response of any serpentine belt drive system with any layouts. In order to obtainthe system’s rotational response, the system’s equations of motion are first linearized in theuse of Taylor expansion. Then the vibration response of a six pulley-belt system, for example,is calculated, and the partial results are compared well with experiments2. The rotational vibration modeling of the serpentine belt drive system with one-wayclutch device is studied. The one way clutch can decouple the system and the accessory with alarge moment of inertia. It has two working states, including separation and engagement. Thismakes the one-way clutch’s equation of motion piece-wise linear. To facilitate the solution, itcan be assumed that the one-way clutch is engaged in most of the time, or using a particularcontinuous function to fit the piece-wise linear equation.3. Some methods of controlling the rotational vibration of the serpentine belt drivesystem are studied. The tensional vibration absorber can reduce the system’s input stimuli,thereby reducing the system’s vibration response. Changing the location of the generatorwheel can adjust the system’s first-order response frequency. The one-way clutch device cansignificantly reduce the fluctuation of the system’s belt tension.4. Using MATLAB, a generally purpose software for the serpentine belt drive system’srotational vibration is developed. The rotational response of any serpentine belt drive systemwith any layouts can be calculated by this software.
