With the development of the long distance power transmission by extra-high voltage and the power electronics technology, reactive power requirement keeps on increasing, which makes the reactive power compensation important. Fortunately, magnetic-valve controlled reactor (MCR) has obvious advantages in reactive power compensation. In this paper, some studies on MCR are carried out, which mainly include operation principle, simulation model, electromagnetic design, tank design as well as software development.Firstly, structural features and operation principle of MCR are introduced. By the analysis of the MCR, the equations of the magnetic circuit together with electric circuit are derived. Meanwhile, the method by increasing tapping ratio to improve the response speed is put forward.Secondly, according to the electromagnetic equations of MCR, the equivalent circuits are deduced. Based on MATLAB/Simulink, the simulation model is established, and simulation researches about volt-ampere characteristics, control characteristics along with harmonic characteristics are made in detail. Good agreement between the experimental and simulation results is achieved, which validates the correctness of the simulation model. In addition, the simulation model of three-phase controllable reactor is built up, by which the reactive power compensation in three-phase power supply system is simulated.Thirdly, in accordance with the electromagnetic relationship of MCR and the fundamental theory of electromagnetic device, the designing program for oil-immersed MCR is written, which include electromagnetic design and tank design.Finally, the computer aided design software for MCR is developed using MATLAB, and which provide graphical and interactive user interface. This software, with clear interface and complete functions, can help to design single-phase and three-phase MCR and do harmonic analysis easily.
