The geomagnetically induced current (GIC), which flow in power systems and networks, can cause power network storm disaster. This kind of quasi-DC current has effect on the safety of power system. It is reported that power network storm disaster events often happens with serious consequences both in China and abroad. In previous studies, researchers always focus on the generation mechanism, calculation methods and the study of control measures of GIC, not including the content of power network storm disaster risk analysis and management, which before the magnetic storm happens. The risk of power network storm disaster is based on the factors such as latitude, network structure, transformer type and so on. This paper first discusses the impacts and events of power network storm disaster in China. The power network storm disaster risk factors are illustrated by analysis the characteristics of different latitudes, the network structure and parameters and the transformer size and structure. All the relevant indicators are standardization by appropriate method in order to evaluate the risk level of power network storm disaster and to get the information of risk point of power network. Finally, based on the evaluation result, power network storm disaster prevention measures are proposed. On the perspective of power system planning and operation and in use of the method of risk management, the emergency disposal method and strategy of power network storm disaster is proposed to reduce the impact on the safe operation of the power system.
