With the development of society and the world’s population aging, the electronic productdesign for the elderly by more and more attention. However, compared to Europe and theUnited States, Japan and some other developed countries, the design and development ofChina’s older products are still very backward. The traditional product design and the pursuitof the principle of function of the first one, that is, make sure the product’s features and thenconsider the man-machine interface. The traditional principles of product design allows theuser to change their behavior to adapt to the machine, allowing users in a passive, resulting inthe misuse of the user. Product shape design semantics to break the shackles of traditionaldesign, a new design method, it is pointed out that the product design should be user-centric,we must first consider the user’s experience and knowledge level, cognitive processes andbehavioral characteristics and other factors, followed by to consider these important factors inhuman-computer interface design, and finally the man-machine interface design to guide thefunctional design of the product, so as to achieve the "user-centric" design. The elderly andother age than adults, have different behavior characteristics, when using the product, so theuse of the product shape design semantics to guide the interface design of the elderly productsis of great significance, will make the older users to easily understand the method of operationof the product and to avoid unnecessary misuse.Product form semantics and man-machine interface design theory, this paper first analyzedand summarized, including highlights and discusses the visual characteristics of the productshape design, visual composition law, the information content and emotional appeal, summedup the visual interface recognition symbol system.Secondly, the physiological and cognitive psychological characteristics of elderly andsummed up the impact of these characteristics of human-computer interface design. Use thesemantics of product form design principles and methods to guide the elderly electronicproducts, man-machine interface design: the principle of "people-oriented" design to simplifycommon operations tasks, the concept of the design model and user model to maintain a highdegree of match, the application of standardized enhance the visibility of the interface. Finally, the summed electronic products for the elderly to use man-machine interface design principles to their own design practice-conceptual design of the multimediatouch-screen universal remote.
