As we know, it is well performed that tracking an ordinary target such as air-breath target using alpha-beta filter or kalman filter for its weak maneuverability. But for ballistic target tracking, it is a hard nut to crack since its movement has strong nonlinearity. In this paper, focused on the nonlinear filtering technology of tracking ballistic target for the application background.Paper deep from the general model of maneuvering target tracking to start, and introduced several maneuvering target tracking models, the linearized methods of nonlinear filter and the extended kalman filter which is nonlinear both dynamic models and measure models in common use. Finally, studied from the dynamic models of ballistic target by the ballistic target force analysis, derived the nonlinear filter method for ballistic target tracking.The orbits of both ballistic missile and satellite were simulated based on the ballistic target dynamic models. Then a tracker for ballistic target using nonlinear filter was brought forward. The simulation result showed the good performance of the filter for the ballistic target tracking with fast convergence, high tracking accuracy and strong tracking stability.
