Developing new energy is the main way to solve the problem of energy crisis andenvironmental pollution, tidal current energy as a kind of the new energy, is being developedby the world. Vertical Axis Water Turbine(VAWT) is a main device for developing the tidalcurrent energy, but during the study of the Vertical Axis Water Turbine, the most experimentsand theories have done before are only aiming at hydrodynamic performance. In the processof achieving large-scale and engineering realization for the VAWT, the structure strength andsecurity are also the key problems. The major content of this paper is to introduce theimplementation method of Fluid and Structure Interaction(FSI) realizing on the VAWT. Basedon the load tests experiment and using the numerical simulation for the VAWT, we completethe strength check of the VAWT by applying the fluid loading on the structure through themethod of FSI, then we compare the results between the experiment and the numericalsimulation. It is proved that the correctness and feasibility for the FSI method that weproposed on the VAWT. This will provide experimental and theoretical basis for the projects.Firstly, the characteristics and working principle for the VAWT are given, the motion andforce analysis for the fixed pitch VAWT are carried out then. We summarize the dimensionlessparameters that influence the hydrodynamic performance of the VAWT, and then enumeratethe advantages and the disadvantages of the stream-tube method, vortex method and the CFDmethod used for VAWT research.Secondly, the FSI theory is given, this chapter mainly introduces the one-way FSI andtwo-way FSI realization process that based on CFX+ANSYS,and introduced the dataexchange process between the two physical models.Thirdly, the VAWT experiment is introduced, including the experimental device, theequipments and the test method, the analysis of experiment result is given then.Fourthly, the one-way FSI on the fixed pitch VAWT is carried out based on the2-D and3-D results of the CFX, and then the comparison between the experiment and the numericalsimulation is given. We give some rational explanations for the experimental results.Lastly, the two-way FSI method on the fixed pitch VAWT is carried out, the stress distribution and the deformation of the blade is given then. Finally, we proposed that the keyfactor that influence the structure strength is the normal force of the blade.
