Due to the high usage of space and small occupancy of area, the number ofhigh-rise buildings increases substantially. Most of the high-rise buildings aredesigned to be used for more than ten years. Both fatigue effect and materialaging will have huge negative impacts on the structure, which decrease thestructure of resistance capacity and lead to the disasters endanger people’s livesand safety. So health monitoring of high-rise buildings has great significance. This paper mainly studies the sensor-placement optimization in healthmonitoring of high-rise buildings.Firstly, this paper summarizes the health monitoring, describes the types ofsensors in the high-rise buildings’ health monitoring system and the problems ofhealth monitoring system. And then considering link the structural healthmonitoring system to the Internet of thing and the monitoring technology andefficiency. This is a direction of future development of monitoring system.Secondly, high-rise buildings can be simplified using a layer model. Basicparameters are calibrated according to the simplified theory, and the simplifiedmodel is compared with finite-element model. The result shows that the layermodel has a good accuracy and it can be used in the calculation. Then, the paper compares two methods of optimal sensor placement whichare the accumulative method and reductive method based on QR decompose ofmain column. The optimal sensor placement criterion is Modal AssuranceCriterion. This article takes a high-rise building as a practice, calculates using thetwo methods and compares the results. The results indicate that the two methodshave very little differences and the cumulative method is relatively better. Finally, it can be determined which floors are best to place the sensors. Forthe selected floor, tri-axial sensors are set on the geometrical centers and twotri-axial sensors on the edges to analyze torsion of the structure.
