Both eco-city theories and practices are under rapid development recently, but theorigin of the eco-city idea is not new at all. Even when the phrase “eco-city” was notcreated, the thoughts were already buried in other urban planning theories. This thesiscollects the ideas related to eco-city from classic occidental urban planning theories, toprove the current eco-city planning theories are not original. Some of the urban planning theories in history supported evacuation, while somewere supportive of centralization. They seem to share the same objective, which is torun the city more efficiently, and to create a better living and natural environment forcitizens, which is consistent with the pursuit of eco-city. This paper tries to conclude thechanges in the development of these theories, and to analyze reasons behind thechanges. This thesis researches on the definition and urban planning theories of eco-city,therefore split the “eco-city perspective” into four parts, namely city and the region, citypattern, structure and layout, lifestyle and behavioral characteristic of the inhabitant, energy and material flow.7ecological principals guiding urban planning are setaccording to the basic rules of ecology, which are optimum law, globality law, thresholdlaw, adaption and deploitation law, dynamic equilibrium law, recycle law and entropylaw. These7principals are then used to analysis urban planning theories in the fourparts mentioned above. This thesis briefly summarizes classic urban planning theories from the end of19thcentury, analyzes from the “eco-city perspective”, and finally draws the conclusion thatthe standard of eco-city is always changing, eco-city urban planning theories are relatedto the current social, economic and city status, but they all pursue a more efficient city.At the end of this thesis, the author suggests China to use appropriate education, planning, technique and administrative methods to plan and build eco-cites and totransform existing cities into eco-cities.
