TVS (Triggered Vacuum Switch) is a kind of Switch, which has wide applicationprospect in the field of pulse power technology. The main problems of TVS are thetime-delay and jitter are large,the working life is not very long. For improving thetriggering property and working stability, the design and improvement on trigger devicesand structure of TVS are developed in this paper.Several triggered circuits are contrasted in this paper. The parameter of triggeredcircuit is optimized, specially the pulse transformer of indirect triggered circuit is mainlystudied by experiment and improved design. The possibility of triggering TVS byfield-breakdown is studied by exploratory experiment.The magnetic core of pulse transformer is compared, and the parameter of winding isadjusted by experiment. The results show that selection of ferrite material using thin-tallring type and reducing the leakage inductance of pulse transformer have good effects onimproving the triggering property of TVS.Under vacuum, experiments on breakdown characteristics of rod-plate gap on DCand pulse voltage are studied for exploring the basic condition of triggering TVS byfield-breakdown. When the pressure is in the range of0.1~1Pa, the DC breakdown voltagedecreases with pressure increasing. When the pressure is in the range of1~103Pa, the DCbreakdown voltage is stable in the range of300~500V. When the pressure is in the rangeof103~104Pa, the DC breakdown voltage increases slowly, and it will increases sharplyafter the pressure is more than104Pa.The results meets the discharge rule of townsendtheory. The breakdown characteristics of Rod-plate gap under pulse voltage (μs order ofmagnitude) is different from on DC. When the distance of rod-plate gap is0.3mm, thepulse breakdown voltage decreases with pressure increasing when the pressure is in therange of1~103Pa, which can provide evidence for the parameter design under pulsetriggering.Based on the study mentioned above, the preliminary experiment of field-breakdownTVS is proposed. The trigger voltage is relatively high but stable, which providesevidence for further study.
